Jan. 18, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Deaundra Tanner led four Oregon State players in double figure scoring with 17 points as the Beavers defeated Washington State 67-62, Thursday.

The loss was the 28th straight on the road for Washington State (7-7, 1-4) in conference play, setting a Pacific-8/Pacific-10 record. It also prevented the Cougars from winning back-to-back Pac-10 games for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

Oregon State (7-9, 1-3) led 59-47 with 3:50 remaining before the Cougars went on an 11-3 run to close the deficit to 62-58 with 1:01 to play. Sophomores David Adams (Tacoma) and Kendall Minor (Selma, Ala.) and junior Mike Bush (Riverside, Calif.) during the spurt.

The Beavers were able to hold on by connecting on 5-of -6 free throws in the final minute. Oregon State made 22-of-26 free throws in the game.

'We were 11-of-14 from the foul line and they were 22-of-26,' WSU head coach Paul Graham said. 'That was the difference in the game.'

Bush led all scorers with 20 points. He is averaging 18.7 points per game in six outings this season. Jimmie Haywood, Brian Jackson and Adam Masten each had 12 points for the Beavers.

Oregon State used a 10-3 run over the final 4:59 of the first half to take a 32-24 lead at intermission and control of the game. The Cougars only field goal in that span was a three-pointer by Minor to make the score 27-24 Beavers with 1:28 to play in the first half.

WSU had a chance to get closer after a steal by junior Bush. However, Bush lost his dribble on a drive to the basket and Oregon State converted the miscue into a dunk by Brian Jackson. Following a missed field goal by Bush, Haywood drilled a three-pointer at the buzzer to give the Beavers their eight-point halftime advantage.

'I thought the last part of the first half was the turning point,' Graham said. 'We had three possessions where we didn't get any points and we ended up down eight at the half.'

Washington State plays at Oregon, Saturday at 3:06 p.m. The game will be televised by FOX Sports Net Northwest.
