Jan. 19, 2001

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The UCLA men's tennis team, slated at No. 3 in the national rankings, opened the season with a 6-1 victory over No. 65 Brigham Young today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. Today's match was the season opener for both teams.

The Bruins got off to slow start by losing the first point of the day, dropping two of three in doubles. First off the court were UCLA's Travis Rettenmaier and Marcin Matkowski, who would not relinquish an early lead, defeating BYU's team of Eric Nyman and Jeff Olson 8-2. The surprise of the day occurred when UCLA's number one doubles team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jean-Julien Rojer were upset by BYU's Carlos Lozano and Gert Vilms, 8-6. With the doubles point of the line, UCLA's tandem of Tobias Clemens and Lassie Ketola dropped a tough match to the Cougars' Jeff Harbach and Anton Rudjuk, 9-7 to give BYU a 1-0 advantage.

UCLA fought back in singles action, as all six players won in straight sets. No. 4 was the first to finish, as UCLA's Erfan Djahangiri defeated Michael Gysens 6-1, 6-0. Soon after, Rettenmaier handed Nyman a 6-2, 6-4 loss on court No. 6. Next off the court was Ketola as he defeated Harbach 6-1, 6-3. UCLA clinched the victory after Rojer defeated Vilms 6-1, 7-5 on court No. 1. Jean-Noel Grinda then took care of Carlos Lozano, 7-5, 6-3 on court No. 2. Tobias Clemens was the last to finish as he ousted Anton Rudjuk 7-5, 6-3.

With today's win, UCLA now owns an undefeated 10-0 series record against Brigham Young.

Tomorrow, UCLA will host the annual Bruin Racqueeteer Day at LATC beginning at 9 am. The Bruins return to action next Friday (Jan. 26) at Arizona and Saturday (Jan. 27) at Arizona State.
