Women's Tennis Records 7-0 Win Over LBSU

Jan. 19, 2001

Los Angeles, Calif. -- 12th-ranked USC women's tennis (2-0) won its second match in as many days against a Big West Conference opponent with a 7-0 victory over Long Beach State this afternoon (Jan. 18) at Marks Tennis Stadium. The Women of Troy defeated UC Irvine, 7-0, yesterday at home.

USC played without No. 9-ranked Jewel Peterson at the No. 1 spot, allowing Krissy Hamilton-Heinberg into the lineup at the No. 6 position. Hamilton-Heinberg played her first match since April 14, 2000, for the Women of Troy, who are now 24-0 all-time against Long Beach State.

The doubles play set the tone for the Trojans. At 7-7 in the No. 2 doubles and both teams already with a win apiece, Bernadette Bayani and Anita Loyola won two straight games to win 9-7 over the team of Alena and Anastasia Dvornikova for the team point.

The 49ers also had an opportunity to win a point at the No. 2 singles position, but USC's Maureen Diaz rallied from a loss in the first set for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Anastasia Dvornikova.

The Women of Troy will open Pac-10 Conference play at No. 7 Arizona State on Friday (Jan. 26) at 1:30 p.m.
