Jan. 20, 2001
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- The 2001 UCLA Baseball season got off to a good start this afternoon, as the 2001 Bruins defeated the Bruin Professionals, 4-3, at the Annual Alumni game. Freshman Preston Griffin hit the game-winning double in the bottom of the sixth inning, driving in classmate Casey Janssen, to clinch the win for the Bruins.
Senior right-handed pitcher Jon Brandt started for the Bruins and was impressive in five innings, allowing only two runs (both unearned) on one hit. He had three strikeouts, including American League Home Run champion Troy Glaus of the Anaheim Angels. Freshman Mike Davern started on the mound for the Alumni team, holding the 2001 Bruins scoreless in the three innings he pitched. He finished with three strikeouts and only allowed two hits.
Kevin Jerkens relieved Davern for the Alumni Team in the fourth inning. Randall Shelley hit a single to start the inning, and Matt Pearl walked to put runners at first and second. Adam Berry hit a double, scoring Shelley, but a throwing error in the field allowed Pearl and Berry to come home as well.
Freshman Chris Cordeiro relieved Brandt for the Bruins in the sixth inning with a 3-2 lead, but allowed the Alumni to tie the game on a Nick Theodorou ground out RBI. With two runners on, Cordeiro struck out Eric Byrnes to end the inning with a 3-3 tie. After Janssen took first base on a Chase Utley error and Christian Lewis walked, Griffin came to the plate and hit a line drive into right field to drive in the winning run.
Earlier in the day, Eric Valent won the home run derby, hitting five balls out of the park. Glaus and Byrnes hit three home runs each, but it wasn't enough to catch UCLA's career home run hitter.
After the home run contest, the 'Old-Timers' took the field for a three-inning game, and there was a ceremony to honor the late Art Reichle, UCLA's head Baseball coach for 30 years.
