Ducks Outlast Shorthanded Cougars

Jan. 20, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. -- Frederick Jones came off the bench to score 19 points and added eight rebounds and eight assists to lead Oregon to a 81-66 Pacific-10 Conference victory, Saturday.

Bryan Bracey added a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds for the Ducks (11-4, 2-3). The Cougars (7-8, 1-5) were led by 19 points from sophomore David Adams (Tacoma). Junior J Locklier (Rock Hill, S.C.) and freshman Marcus Moore (Inglewood, Calif.) each added 14 points for WSU while junior Mike Bush (Riverside, Calif.) chipped in 13.

'I thought we did an outstanding job considering we did not have the numbers we usually have,' WSU head coach Paul Graham said. 'I want to commend our guys for their effort.'

The Cougars played with only seven players after senior Eddie Miller (Reseda, Calif.), junior Framecio Little (Anderson, S.C.), sophomores Nick Graham (Stillwater, Okla.), Jerry McNair (Torrance, Calif.) and Kendall Minor (Selam, Ala.) and freshman E.J. Harris (Los Angeles, Calif.) were all sent back to Pullman earlier in the day.

'We had six young men who violated a team rule and were suspended for the game,' WSU Graham said. 'We will look into taking further action when we get back to Pullman. We are a team and anytime players action take away from what the program is trying to accomplish, those players must be held accountable.'

Graham stressed no criminal activity is involved and that his decision was based strictly on team policy.

The Cougars trailed 37-27 at the half before scoring six of the first seven points in the second half to cut Oregon's lead to 38-33 with 17:42 to play. However, the Ducks responded with an 8-0 run to increase their lead to 46-33 at the 14:58 mark. WSU was unable to get closer than 11 points for the remainder of the game.

In the first half, Oregon's inside game helped the Ducks build their 10-point halftime advantage. Oregon scored 26 of its 37 points in the paint in the opening stanza.

The Ducks led by as many as 14 points at 33-19 before the Cougars went on an 8-0 run to make the score 33-27 with 1:50 left in the first half. Adams drilled a pair of three-pointers sandwiched around a layup by Bush during the spurt.

Oregon outrebounded WSU 46-29 and had 19 second chance points to the Cougars five. Largely due to the lack of bench players available for WSU, the Ducks bench outscored the Cougars 61-0.

WSU returns home Thursday, January 25 to host California at 7 p.m. The Cougars are 6-0 at Beasley Coliseum this season.
