Jan. 21, 2001
BERKELEY - No. 24 California opened its home season with a second-place finish in a quad meet Sunday afternoon in Haas Pavilion. No. 13 Oklahoma won the competition with a score of 195.300, followed by Cal at 195.175, Utah State at 194.450 and Arizona at 193.350.
Freshman standout Katreece Stone contributed in the balance beam and the bar event as she placed second in both with a score of 9.900 on the beam and a 9.875 on the bars.
Carrie Kreifels had another strong meet as she finished third in the all-around (38.175) with an individual best today in the bars and the floor (9.875).
The Bears recorded a season-best score in the quad meet after a 191.650 showing at Denver and a 194.400 mark in the Silicon Valley Gymnastics Classic and look to improve even further in Cal's next meet at Oregon State.
Head coach Trina Tinti expects much from this season's squad even after a successful weekend in which the Bears finished first and second place in a span of two days.
'More then anything, I knew that we were a 196-plus team,' said Tinti. 'We haven't got a 196-team (yet), but if we would have done what we were capable of today, we would have gotten a 196.'
Cal heads to Corvallis, Ore. next Sunday, Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. to face the Beavers in a Pac-10 match-up.
