Husky Track Teams To Take Weekend Off

SEATTLE--The University of Washington track & field teams are taking the weekend off from competition.

The teams will use the off-week after a fruitful weekend in Cheney, Wash., to get a jump on preparation for the Air Force Classic, which will take place Feb. 3 in Colorado Springs, Colo.

The Husky men's squad features two individuals that have already qualified for the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Senior sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker automatically qualified for the NCAAs clocking a time of 6.12 in the 55m dash at the Jerry Martin Invitational Saturday. Hooker won the NCAA 55-meter title in 1998. Sophomore Brad Walker provisionally qualified for the NCAA meet in the pole vault with a mark of 5.25 meters (17-2 3/4) at the Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev., Saturday.

Several individuals have already qualified for the Mountain Pacific Indoor Championships, which will take place Feb. 23-24 in Los Angeles and Flagstaff, Ariz.

The following UW men have reached Mountain Pacific qualify marks: senior Ja'Warren Hooker (55m dash), freshman Matt Hennessy (55m dash), senior Josh Renz (55m HH), freshman Jesse Giordano (55m HH), freshman Marc James (55m HH), senior Sean Steele (high jump), red-shirt sophomore Kevin deSouza (long jump), sophomore Doug Jackson (shot put), and sophomore Mat Schwinn (weight throw).

Those reaching Mountain Pacific qualifying marks on the women's side are: sophomore Jamara Smith (55m dash and long jump), junior Shavon Hawkins (55m dash and 55m HH), senior Chelsie Pentz (55m dash), sophomore Tesha Moore (400m run), junior Kelsey Sheppard (55m HH), junior Zee Ogarro (55m HH) and junior Searan Salibian (shot put).

Husky senior sprinter Ja'Warren Hooker was ranked eighth in the United States in the 400 meters for the year 2000 by Track & Field News. The publication listed the top ten athletes in the world and the U.S. for each event in its February edition.
