Jan. 25, 2001

BERKELEY, CA - Five members of the California volleyball program, head coach Rich Feller, assistant coach Lee Maes and current players Candace McNamee, Leah Young and Gabrielle Abernathy, will be traveling to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO in early February for USA National Team tryouts.

On Feb. 1-4 the USA National Team is holding open tryouts at the Olympic Training Center. The tryouts are for the A-National Team for the next quadrennial and the A-2 National Team that will train this summer. Feller, who will be starting his third season as the Bears head volleyball coach next fall and is a former National Team assistant coach, has been invited to be one of the Evaluators for the tryouts, while Maes has been selected as one of the court coaches.

Cal will be sending three athletes to the tryout, as permitted by NCAA rules. They are junior setter/outside hitter Candace McNamee (who has participated on the A-2 National Team in previous summers), sophomore outside hitter Leah Young and freshman outside hitter Gabrielle Abernathy (both Young and Abernathy have participated in national team tryouts while in high school). Over 65 athletes will be participating in the national team tryouts.

The Cal volleyball team, which finished the 2000 season 13-15, will be having its annual team banquet this Saturday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. at Hs Lordships restaurant in the Berkeley Marina.
