Husky Gymnasts Finish Second to No. 10 Stanford

Jan. 28, 2001

Seattle - Washington finished second to 10th-ranked Stanford in a three-way women's gymnastics meet at Bank of America Arena. Seattle Pacific finished third at the event. Stanford won its first meet of the season with a score of 196.050 while the Huskies recorded their best score of the year with 195.925 points. The Falcons turned in a score of 191.875.

The Huskies and Cardinal split the individual honors with Washington's Stacy Wong winning the uneven bars (9.975) and Mandi Klug capturing her second straight floor exercise title with a 9.950 score. Stanford's Robin Phelps won vault with a score of 9.900 and Lindsey Wing took top honors on beam (9.875) and in the all-around (39.375).

Washington's efforts were highlighted by a number of career-best performances. The Huskies tied the school record on floor exercise with a score of 49.425. Klug's winning score was a career best for her. Wong turned in personal-best scores on three events and in the all-around. In addition to her bars victory, she had scores of 9.825 on beam, 9.875 on floor and 39.350 in the all-around competition.

'We dropped out of the national rankings this week for the first time in recent memory and this score should help us to climb back up there,' says Husky coach Bob Levesque. 'Stanford is a very talented squad, with several former national team members. We usually have a close meet with them and this was no exception. I really like the way Stacy and Mandi have come on at the start of this season. If Lanna does not fall on her vault landing, we are pushing Stanford for first place. Lanna is a good vaulter, so for her to score a 9.250 is unusual.

The Huskies continue their competition against Pac-10 opponents this week when Washington travels to Arizona State for a dual-meet on Friday, Feb. 2. The Huskies record now stands at 4-2.
