Ducks Tied for Fifth at Ping-Intercollegiate

Jan. 29, 2001

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Four Oregon golfers shot two over or lower to leave the Ducks tied for fifth with fourth-ranked South Carolina at 6-over par after Monday's first round of the Ping-Arizona Intercollegiate, played at the 6,776-yard, par-71 Raven at Sabino Springs Golf Course. It is the first action of the spring season for the Ducks.

Oregon junior Aaron Byers fired an even-par 71 and is tied for 13th, while Chris Carnahan and John Ellis, both sophomores, and junior Brandon Harnden all carded rounds of 2-over 73.

Oregon's 6-over 290 composite is 14 strokes back of No. 16 USC's breakneck pace of 8-under par. But the Ducks are just seven strokes back of second place Ohio State's 283 and four strokes behind Arizona State and California, tied for third at 286. Eighth-ranked Brigham Young shot a 21-over 305, while No. 10 Arizona carded a 13-over 297. Oregon has finished fifth or better in three of four events in 2000-01.

After 15 holes, second round action was suspended at 6 p.m. Monday due to darkness. The remaining holes will be completed Tuesday morning before the start of the final round.
