Jan. 30, 2001

SABINO SPRINGS, Ariz. - - The Oregon State men's golf squad took 10th at the University of Arizona's Ping/Arizona Intercollegiate on Tuesday with a score of 875 at The Raven at Sabino Springs, which plays to 6,900 yards and carries a par of 71.

OSU shot 292-292-291 over the three rounds, while senior Anthony Arvidson led the Beavers with his 3-over 216. Arvidson, who has carded just one round over 74 this year, fired a final-round 71 to finish in a seven-way tie for 23rd. He has finished in the top 25 in each of the five tournaments he has played this season, and has two top-10 finishes to his credit as well.

The remaining four OSU golfers, none of whom had seen action for OSU before this year, all finished with solid scores to help the Beavers to their fifth top-10 finish of the season.

Redshirt freshman Daren Grieg shot a 1-under 70 in Tuesday's final round to come in at a 4-over 217 and finish tied for 30th.

The team had to finish the final three holes of the second round on Tuesday morning, due to Monday's second round being postponed after 15 holes because of darkness.

Dave Yarnes, a junior college transfer, closed with a 77 after carding a 1-under 70 in the second round. Yarnes finished tied for 41st with a 221.

Sean Deacon and David Williams, a redshirt freshman and true freshman, respectively, finished at 225 and 226.

USC ran away with the team title, as was the case in last year's tournament, with a score of 19-under 833. California was a distant second, finishing at 855.

The Trojans' Alex Kuyumjian took medalist honors with his 7-under score of 206, while three golfers tied for second at 208.

OSU's next action will be in Kona, Haw., for the Taylor Made Intercollegiate on Feb. 15-17.
