Grinda, Rojer Fall In First Round Of Rolex National Indoors
Feb. 1, 2001
Farmers Branch, Tex.- UCLA senior Jean-Noel Grinda and sophomore Jean-Julien Rojer both fell in the first round this afternoon of the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the Brookhaven Country Club.
Grinda faced the tournament's number one seed, SMU's Genius Chidzikwe and looked to be on the verge of pulling an upset after winning the first set 6-4. Chidzikwe fought back though, and took the next two sets by identical scores of 6-3 to win the match. Rojer was not as fortunate as he fell in straight sets to Matias Boeker of Georgia, 6-4, 6-2. Grinda will face Mississippi State's Rene Combete, while Rojer is slated to play Shuon Madden of Texas A&M in tommorow's consolation first round.
In doubles action, the tandem of Grinda and Rojer forced tie-breakers in both sets but failed in a upset bid against second-seeded Boeker and Travis Parrott of Georgia, 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4). The tandem will face UNLV's Gegor Skorin and Nenad Zivkovic in the consolation round, which is also scheduled for tomorrow.
