No. 13 Beavers beaten by No. 2 Oklahoma State
Feb. 2, 2001
STILLWATER, Okla. - Oregon State picked up wins from 157-pounder Eric Jorgensen and heavyweight Jason Cooley on Friday but the 13th-ranked Beavers fell to second-ranked Oklahoma State 35-6 in non-league wrestling at Gallagher-Iba Arena. Oregon State (9-5 overall, 5-2 Pacific-10) now visits eighth-ranked Oklahoma on Sunday at noon PST.
'I thought they caught us on our heels,' Oregon State head coach Joe Wells said of the Cowboys (14-1, 4-0 Big 12). 'We weren't aggressive enough, they got on a roll a bit and took it to us. We let a couple of matches slip away. They've got good athletes, but we didn't make them earn it. We made it a little to easy in some cases.'
Both Jorgensen and Cooley beat nationally-ranked wrestlers for the Beavers' wins.
Jorgensen, ranked sixth, edged 16th-ranked Shane Roller 10-9 in overtime. After neither wrestler could score a takedown in the first overtime, Jorgensen chose the 'down' position to start the 30-second second overtime.
After Jorgensen tried to squirm away for the first 18 seconds, a restart was called with 12 seconds remaining. This time, Jorgensen was able to free his legs by sitting out when the referee's whistle started the action, he finally completed his escape with two seconds remaining to earn his sixth straight victory. Jorgensen is now 24-5 with two pins this season.
Cooley's win wasn't as dramatic. The nation's 11th-ranked heavyweight scored an 8-4 triumph over 13th-ranked James Huml, giving Cooley his 15th win in his last 19 matches. Cooley is 18-5 with two pins this season.
In a matchup of top-10 174-pounders, Oregon State's eighth-ranked Nathan Coy couldn't quite knock off seventh-ranked Tyrone Lewis, losing 8-5. It was only Coy's fourth loss in his last 22 matches, and he is now 25-7 with one pin this season.
OSU 125-pounder Michael Delaney and 197-pounder Jason Lovell also saw upset bids fall short. Delaney, filling in for ninth-ranked Nathan Navarro, lost 5-1 to eighth-ranked Matt Brown after trailing just 2-1 with less than a minute remaining. Lovell was beaten 12-4 by fourth-ranked Mark Munoz after being within 5-4 after two periods and still being within 6-4 midway through the final period.
'We've just got to get after it and not stand around,' Wells said. 'Now we're anxious to get to Norman and give it another go.'
