TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Sitting atop the Pac-10 with a five-game winning streak, Arizona State looksto surpass last season's win total when No. 22 Oregon visits the Valley of theSun on Saturday.
Unranked Arizona State (14-6, 6-2) moved into sole possession of first placein the Pac-10 with a 58-51 victory over Oregon State on Thursday. Junior MelodyJohnson had 14 points and nine rebounds for the Sun Devils, who own a one-gamelead over Arizona, Oregon and Washington.
The current five-game streak is Arizona State's longest since a six-game runduring the 1991-92 season.
Thursday's win gave the Sun Devils 14 this season, matching last season'stotal. It is also their most victories in a season since going 17-10 in1992-93.
Arizona State had lost its first three games this season against rankedopponents before beating No. 23 Arizona 67-57 last Saturday. Prior to that, theSun Devils' last victory against a ranked opponent came on Jan. 8, 1998.
Junior guard Amanda Levens and Johnson are Arizona State's top scorers andare among the conference leaders with 14.4 and 13.9 points per game,respectively. Johson's 6.8 rebounds per game puts her fifth in the Pac-10.
Oregon (12-6, 5-3) fell from the top spot in the conference with an 88-76loss to Arizona on Thursday despite junior guard Jamie Craighead scoring 21points, all on 3-pointers.
The Ducks have lost three of four following a seven-game winning streak.
Craighead is shooting 46.7 percent (50-for-107) from 3-point range, good forsecond in the Pac-10.
In order to cool off the surging Sun Devils, the Ducks will need an improvedeffort on the defensive end after Arizona shot 54 percent (32-for-59) from thefield on Thursday.
Senior forward Brianne Meharry is just 11 points shy of reaching 1,000. Shewould become the second Oregon player this season and the 15th overall toaccomplish that feat.
Oregon has won 11 straight over Arizona State and 24 of 32 all-timemeetings. The Sun Devils haven't beaten the Ducks since Jan. 28, 1995.
