BERKELEY - Cal junior guard Dennis Gates will miss 2-3 weeks of action after undergoing an appendectomy Saturday.

Gates began feeling discomfort late Friday and had the surgery on Saturday. He may be able to return as soon as the Stanford game Feb. 17.

Gates, a 6-3 guard from Chicago, is averaging 3.4 ppg this year. He had 10 points in Cal's win at Washington last week and came off the bench for six points in the Bears victory over UCLA Thursday. He is shooting 34.6 percent from three-point range (9-26) and leads the team in free throw shooting at 87.5 percent (21-24). Gates started the first four games of the season, but has come off the bench most of the year.
