Feb. 3, 2001
San Marcos, Texas - The University of Oregon softball team (3-1) picked up a pair of wins at the Southwest Texas State Tournament in San Marcos, Texas Saturday. The Ducks defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi 11-3 in their first game and ended the day with a 4-0 win over Baylor.
'I'm very pleased with how our team came out today,' Oregon head coach Rick Gamez said. 'We lost a game that we should have won yesterday, but the girls came out very focused today and I'm very proud of them for that.'
Sophomore Andrea Vidlund (1-1) picked up her first win of the season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi, giving up just two walks and tallying 12 strike outs. Offensively, Vidlund was 1-for-3 with one run scored and one run batted in.
Sophomore transfer Lisa Wangler continued to be a strong addition for Oregon. Wangler picked up her first Division I win against Baylor, giving up zero runs and six hits in seven innings pitched. Wangler also thrived in the lead off spot, going 3-for-4 in the first game and 2-for-3 against Baylor. She scored two of Oregon's four runs against the Bears and also scored twice against Texas A&M.
'Lisa did a great job all around,' Gamez said. 'She threw the ball well, was swinging the bat well and did a great job defensively. We were hoping to be able to use her on the mound and I'm pleased with how she played.'
'We are right where we expected to be at this point in the season,' Gamez said. 'We're back on track after yesterday's loss. I'm happy with our pitching and our defense and I liked the fact that we were able to score runs when we had two outs.'
