Softball Wins Two Of Three Games At Southern Utah Tournament On Opening Day

Feb. 3, 2001

ST. GEORGE, Utah - - The No. 16 Oregon State women's softball squad opened its season by winning two of three games on Saturday at the Southern Utah tournament, as OSU beat Brigham Young twice (3-2, 7-4) and lost to Southern Utah (1-0).

'Overall, it was a difficult first day, with three games,' OSU head coach Kirk Walker said. 'We did pretty well, though we were a bit inconsistent. It's difficult when your two starting pitchers are sick and aren't at 100 percent.'

The Beavers (2-1) defeated Brigham Young 3-2 to open the day on the strength of a 2-for-4 performance by left fielder Michelle Chariton. She also drove in a run, while second baseman Cara Maxey went 1-for-2 with two RBI. Maxey's two RBI came in the fourth inning, when she drove in Steph Adams and Clare Burnum.

OSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead after four innings, and pitcher Crystal Draper - who, along with Monica Hoffman, was battling an illness - and the rest of the defense held on for the win as the Cougars brought home two runs in the sixth inning. Draper went the entire seven innings, giving up eight hits and striking out five.

Saturday's second game proved to be OSU's only blemish on the day, as tournament host Southern Utah put the clamps on the Beavers to steal a 1-0 win. OSU's Hoffman, a true freshman, pitched a seven-hit, five-strikeout performance, but OSU managed only four hits of its own. The Cougars got their run in the first inning and played shutout ball the rest of the way to preserve the win.

The third game stood in stark contrast to the first two, as OSU exploded for seven runs on 13 hits and then held off a late rally by BYU for a 7-4 win in the teams' second meeting of the day.

Cara Maxey got the Beavers on the board with a solo homer to right in the second, after the Cougars put three hits together in the first to take a 2-0 lead.

OSU battered the Cougars in the third, as they kept the pressure on with a four-run inning to open up a 5-2 margin. The Beavers led 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh before giving up two runs for the final score of 7-4.

The Orange and Black used the combination of Kaitlin Wilson, Draper, and Hoffman on the mound to limit BYU to 10 hits and three earned runs. OSU allowed just one walk, while striking out five.

'Offensively, we have some great potential,' Walker said of his team that racked up 24 total hits on the day. 'We had some well-hit balls and some good hitting performances. We had good contributions throughout the lineup all day.'

The Beavers wrap up tournament play with a 10 a.m. matchup against Saint Mary's on Sunday.
