Oregon Women's Tennis Takes 6-1 Win Over Portland

Feb. 4, 2001

EUGENE, Ore. --The Oregon Ducks women's tennis squad took its third consecutive home win Sunday with a 6-1 win over Portland.

Easily handled doubles matches inspired the Ducks to win five out of the six singles competitions.

'Our doubles got us off to a good start and gave us confidence to put away the singles,' said Oregon Women's Tennis Head Coach Jack Griffin.

Most notable was freshman Courtney Nagle, with an 8-2 doubles win alongside partner Monika Gieczys and a sweeping 6-0, 6-0 match at No.6 singles, defeating Portland's Lisa Bessman.

'Courtney [Nagle} had a great day,' said Griffin. 'She showed today she has the potential to play high level tennis and dominate the court.'

On the court, the Duck squad played a solid game with intensity and consistency to finish off the Pilots.

'We covered the basics well and did the right things,' said Griffin. 'We didn't make a lot of mistakes and played to win.'

This win records the Ducks' third consecutive win at the Student Tennis Center.

Up next, the Ducks will battle the University of Arizona in Tucson, Ariz., Friday, February 9 at 1:30 p.m.
