Wrestling Breezes Past Cal State Bakersfield 34-9

TEMPE, Ariz. - The 15th-ranked Arizona State wrestling team emerged victorious in its fourth straight dual, winning eight of 10 bouts en route to defeating Cal State Bakersfield handily by a score of 34-9 Sunday afternoon at Wells Fargo Arena.

The Sun Devils improve their overall record to 9-3 and end the regular season Pac-10 schedule with a perfect 4-0 record. Cal State Bakersfield falls to 8-4 overall, and suffers its first conference loss falling to 3-1 in the Pac-10.

ASU turned in two pins, two major decisions and one technical fall against the Roadrunners. The Sun Devils showed their dominance early, winning the first three matches by bonus points and taking as much as a 31-0 lead through seven matches.

With the match beginning at 133 pounds, junior David Douglas pinned Joe Garcia in 2:19 to give ASU an early 6-0 lead. Sophomore All-American Eric Larkin followed with a 17-4 major decision victory over Zhon Kuraspediani at 141 and junior Dana Holland recorded the second fall of the day, pinning Thomas Juarez in 4:26 at 149 pounds.

Following Holland's pin, sophomore Rocky Smart earned a 9-5 decision over Elizar Ceballos at 157 pounds and senior All-American Steve Blackford notched an 8-2 decision over Ian Nelms at 165.

ASU continued to win by bonus points as the afternoon went on , as junior Curtis Owen recorded a 10-2 major decision victory over Chris Carlino and senior R.D. Pursell scored a technical fall win over Max Harris, 20-4.

Cal State Bakersfield got on the board in the 197 match as Robbie Odell defeated ASU senior Mike Marshall by a 5-3 decision. Sophomore heavyweight Kellan Fluckiger extended the Sun Devil lead to 34-3 with a 9-2 decision over John Devine, before an ASU forfeit at 125 pounds culminated the day's contest.

Just three dual matches remain on the regular season schedule for the Sun Devils, two of which will be held at Wells Fargo Arena. ASU hosts Pennsylvania Friday, Feb. 9 at 7 p.m. before going on the road to face Iowa State in Ames, Iowa, Sunday, Feb. 11 at 3 p.m. CST. ASU will then return home for the final match of the regular season vs. Oklahoma State Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
