Softball To Play Two Doubleheaders
Feb. 6, 2001
Two doubleheaders are on the slate for this week, a road twinbill at No. 14 Cal State Fullerton, and the Bruins home opener, a doubleheader against San Diego. The Bruins have not faced Cal State Fullerton since a 7-2 victory on May 19, 1996, in the NCAA Regional Final. The Titans lead the all-time series against the Bruins by a 27-22-1 margin. Against the Toreros, the Bruins hold a 3-0 all-time advantage, including a 2-0 victory on May 3, 2000, at the rain-shortened Torero Invitational Tournament. Saturday's doubleheader against USD originally was scheduled as an away game, but is now scheduled for a 1 pm first pitch at UCLA's Easton Stadium.
Bruins Sweep Spartan Early Bird Tournament
UCLA swept through the field at the Spartan Early Bird Classic, opening the 2001 season with a 5-0 record and the tournament championship. The Bruins final scheduled game of the tournament, against host San Jose State, was started, but because the Bruins had to leave the field after approximately 20 minutes of play in order to catch their plane back to Los Angeles, it was not an official game and will not appear on UCLA's schedule.
On the opening day of play, the Bruins posted two run-rule victories over the host Spartans and Cal State Northridge before freshman Keira Goerl stepped into the circle against Cal Poly and pitched five perfect innings en route to her first collegiate victory, a5-0 two-hit shutout. Senior Stephanie Swenson and junior Amanda Freed both went 2-0 in the circle, with Swenson posting 12 strikeouts and just four walks, while Freed struck out 10 and walked one without allowing a run in 12 innings pitched. Offensively, junior Stacey Nuveman led the way, hitting .538 (7-for-13) with three doubles, one home run, six walks and seven RBI to go along with a 1.000 SLG% and .684 on-base percentage. No All-Tournament Team was named at the Early Bird Classic.
Schedule Changes Abound
The Bruins 2001 schedule has undergone numerous changes since the poster and schedule cards went to press, and changes to UCLA's schedule have been made as recently as last week. The following is a rundown of the changes to UCLA's upcoming schedule:
- The Feb. 10 doubleheader against San Diego was originally scheduled as an away game. It has been moved to UCLA's Easton Stadium, and is still a 1 pm first pitch.
- UCLA's doubleheader at Southwest Texas State has been moved from Thurs., Feb. 22, to Mon. Feb. 26, but is still a 1 pm start.
- UCLA's Alumni Game has been moved from January to March 24.
Head Coach Sue Enquist
The 2001 season marks Sue Enquist's 13th campaign as head coach of the Bruin softball program. It is her 22nd year as part of UCLA's softball coaching staff and her 26th year of involvement with the program as either a coach or player. Enquist has a 584-115-1 (.835) coaching record and 1,011 wins in her Bruin softball career as a player, assistant coach and head coach, combined. As a player from 1975-78, Enquist became UCLA's first All-American while establishing the Bruin career batting average record of .401. She is still the only UCLA player to complete her career with a batting average over .400.
