Cal Falls in Dual Home Opener, 5-2
Feb. 8, 2001
BERKELEY, CA - After a split on the road two weeks ago, the Cal men returned to Hellman Tennis Courts for a matchup with the No. 18-ranked Fresno State Bulldogs for a chance to boost their record and head into the weekend with momentum. The Bears (1-2, 1-1 in the Pac-10), however, could not find their rhythm, falling in four singles matches after starting off the day losing the doubles point. Fresno State came out on top with a 5-2 victory over Cal.
The day looked promising when Cal's doubles tandem of senior Scott Kintz and freshman Balazs Veress destroyed Fresno State's Michael Moretti and Alex Menichini, 8-0, in just over thirty minutes. The two other tandems for the Bears never caught stride as the duo of senior Adrian Barnes and sophomore John Paul Fruttero lost to Peter Luczak and David Mullins, 8-5, while junior Ben Miles and sophomore Robert Kowalczyk fell to Sean Cooper and Nick Fustar, 8-5.
Trying to rebound from losing the doubles point, the Bears could only manage two singles points, winning the No. 2 and No. 4 spots. Adrian Barnes grabbed the No. 2 point, defeating David Mullins, 6-3, 2-1, ret., after Mullins pulled out of competition with a sore back. Scott Kintz won the other singles match of the day, defeating Nick Fustar in straight sets, 6-0, 6-4.
The Bears host Santa Clara and Saint Mary's at Hellman Tennis Courts on Suday, Feb. 11, in a double-header starting at 9 a.m.
