Feb. 7, 2001
FULLERTON, CA - The top-ranked UCLA softball team swept a road doubleheader against No. 14 Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday night, winning 6-0 and 18-3 (5 inn.). With the victories, UCLA is now 7-0 on the season, while the Titans fall to 5-3.
In game one, leadoff hitter Amanda Freed tripled to record the first hit in the newly constructed Titan Softball Complex. She would later score to post the first run at Titan Softball Complex. The Bruins scored the majority of their runs in the fourth inning when Natasha Watley hit a two-run double down the left field line, and a two-RBI double by Courtney Dale. UCLA added a sixth run in the sixth inning, when Watley hit a one-out double and was singled home by catcher Stacey Nuveman. Freed earned the win in the pitching circle, striking out five and walking one.
The nightcap was all offense for the Bruins. Freed opened with a single down the left field line, before sophomore Tairia Mims walked and Nuveman hit a line-drive over the left field fence for a three-run home run.
The second inning saw more of the same, with Stephanie Ramos, Crissy Buck, Lupe Brambila, Freed, Watley and Courtney Dale scoring runs in the inning, as the Bruins batted around. In the third, four more runs went up on the board, with RBI hits by Watley and Dale. Nuveman hit a second home run in the fourth inning, this time a two-run shot to right field. Freshman Keira Goerl earned the win for the Bruins, and is now 2-0 on the season.
UCLA returns to action on Saturday at 1 pm against San Diego in the team's home opener. This doubleheader was originally scheduled as a road game for the Bruins, but it will be played at Easton Stadium on the UCLA campus.
