BERKELEY, Calif - California head men's soccer coach Kevin Grimes announced today the signing of 10 outstanding prep soccer players to National Letters of Intent to play at Cal beginning with the 2001 season. Of the 10 signees, four are defenders, four are midfielders, along with a forward and a goalkeeper. They include Kyle Navarro, a defender from Fair Oaks, CA (Del Campo High School), Troy Roberts, a defender from Fremont, CA (Washington High School), Yohei Fukuda, a defender from Irvine, CA (University High School), Nick McNeil, a defender from La Mesa, CA (University of San Diego High School), Michael Munoz, a midfielder from Los Alamitos, CA (Los Alamitos High School), Angel Quintero, a midfielder from Whittier, CA (La Habra High School), Alex Martinez, a midfielder from Irvine, CA (Irvine High School), Garrett Terracciano, a midfielder from San Diego, CA (Torrey Pines High School), Carl Acosta, a forward from Fair Oaks, CA (Bella Vista High School) and Chris Drake, a goalkeeper from San Rafael, CA (Marin Academy).

'This has been a tremendous recruiting year for Cal Men's Soccer,' said Grimes. 'These players are the foundation for our program and some will have an opportunity to contribute immediately as freshman. The challenge for them will be how quickly they adapt to the faster and more physical college game. With this experience, they have the ability to become excellent college players.'

Many of these recruits have played extensively together on club, state and regional teams.

Quintero, Munoz, Martinez and Fukuda are apart of the Irvine Strikers in Irvine, that won the Coast Soccer League Premier U-19 Championship in 2000, as well as the California U-19 Premier League State Championship, also in 2000.

Navarro and Acosta both play for the San Juan Lightning in Sacramento, which most recently won the Cal-North State Cup Championship and the Far West Regional Championship, both in 2000. They finished third in the U-17 National Championship, which was held in Orlando FL.

On a national level, Fukuda, Roberts, Acosta and McNeil are members of the West Regional ODP team.

Roberts, in addition to being a member of the West Regional OPP team, was named to the U.S. U-18 National Team in 2001 and is currently training with the U-18's in Bradenton, FL.

Fukuda, McNeil and Terracciano are all members of the Cal-South State ODP team won the regional championship and advanced to the to the ODP National Final Four Tournament, held in Las Vegas this March.

Drake, the lone keeper of the group, also comes to Cal with a list of recent accomplishments. He has participated on the Cal-North State ODP teams in 1999 and 2000 and, as a captain of the Marin Academy team, he helped lead the team to the North Coast Section Championship in 2000.

'As players, they have the skill and creativity to fit into our style of play,' said Grimes. 'As people, they have the personality and strong character that we want in our program. It's no coincidence that these players all come from excellent club programs that have developed these traits.'
