Peterson Clinches Win For USC

Feb. 9, 2001

Los Angeles, Calif. -- A three-set win at No. 1 by USC's Jewel Peterson clinched an upset victory for the 13th-ranked Women of Troy over No. 9 Pepperdine this afternoon (Feb. 9) at Marks Tennis Stadium.

Tied at three apiece, the dual came down to a familiar match-up between the Waves' Ipek Senoglu and Peterson. Last week, Senoglu eliminated Peterson in the second round of the National Collegiate Indoor Championships in Farmers Branch, Texas.

After winning the first set 6-3, Senoglu allowed Peterson to come back in the second, forcing a tiebreaker at 6-6. USC's ninth-ranked sophomore captured the set 7-6 (7-2) and pushed the match into a third set. As the only Trojan left playing after a USC loss at No. 4 tied the dual, Peterson rolled to a 6-3 win in the final set for the victory.

Pepperdine began the match with a 1-0 lead after winning two of three doubles matches, including a 8-5 win at the top-spot by No. 1-ranked Senoglu and Paola Palencia over Peterson and Tiffany Brymer.

USC will travel to Seattle, Wash., next Thursday (Feb. 15) for the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.
