Switzer Dominates Again To Lead No. 6 Baseball To 8-1 Win Over Duke

Feb. 9, 2001

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Junior left-handed pitcher Jon Switzer backed up his National Player of the Week performance from last Friday with another stellar outing, striking out 11 and not allowing an earned run in leading the No. 6 Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team to a 8-1 win over Duke Friday night at Packard Stadium.

The win improves the Sun Devils' 2001 record to 5-1, having not lost since the season opener Jan. 26 to Texas-Arlington (5-3). Duke dropped its second straight game and fell to 1-3 on the year.

Switzer (Houston, Texas) was once again phenomenal on the mound, laboring eight innings and 117 pitches to strike out 11 and allow only five hits. After his 13-strikeout performance last Friday vs. Southern Utah, Switzer now has 24 in the last 13 combined innings and 30 for the year. He is now 2-0 with a 1.47 ERA.

At the plate the Sun Devils were led by the top four in the batting lineup, with Jonah Martin, Mel Stocker, Casey Myers and Brooks Conrad all notching multiple-hit games and combining to go 9-for-17 with six of the seven RBI. Martin (Waianae, Hawai'i) led all players with a 3-for-5 game and scored two runs. Freshmen Jeremy West (Las Vegas) and Steve Garrabrants (Phoenix) also collected two hits as ASU out-hit Duke 14-5.

ASU took the early lead with five runs in the second frame. Garrabrants started the rally with a double and was plated one batter later when West drove a double of his own into the right-center field gap. Myers provided the big blow with a two-run double down the left field line to cap the nine-batter, five-run inning.

The Sun Devils now hold a 6-0 lead in the all-time series and have outscored the Blue Devils 37-3 in the four games dating back to last year.

Duke starter Ryan Caradonna (0-2) was saddled with the loss, despite pitching well after the second. Caradonna allowed five runs and struck out two in seven innings. The Blue Devils were led at the plate by shortstop Kevin Kelly who was 2-for-4.

ASU and Duke will play a double-header Saturday starting at 1 p.m. The first game will be televised live locally on Cox Channel 9.
