Cal Baseball Shutout by BYU Pitcher Nate Fernley

BERKELEY, CA - Led by the outstanding pitching of senior right-hander Nate Fernley and two-run homers by Michael Wirrick and Michael Davies, Brigham Young shutout the California baseball team, 4-0, Saturday at Evans Diamond. The Bears fall to 4-2 on the season, while the Cougars improve to 6-4 overall. BYU won the first game of the series, 2-1, Thursday, while Cal won game two, 5-3, Friday.
Fernley improved his record to 4-0 in impressive fashion. He threw a complete game, allowing only three hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. The Cougars scored their runs on a two-run homer by Davies off of Bear starter Ryan Atkinson (0-1, 5.3 innings, five hits three runs, two walks, four strikeouts) in the second inning, and Wirrick's two-run homer in the sixth inning off of the Bears freshman Brian Montalbo.
Cal did not get a hit off of Fernley until freshman Conor Jackson's infield single in the fourth inning. The Bears other two hits off of Fernley was pinch-hitter Spencer Wyman's single to right field in the eighth inning and Jackson's double down the left field line in the ninth inning.
Besides Wirrick and Davies two-run homers, Tim Law also led BYU, going 3-for-4.
Cal will next travel to Pacific, Tuesday, Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. at Billy Hebert Field in Stockton, CA.
