No. 6 Cal Defeats San Diego State, 6-1

SAN DIEGO, CA - The No. 6 Cal women's tennis team (3-1, 2-1 in Pac-10) took down a relatively strong San Diego State tennis team at the SDSU Tennis Courts. The No. 27-ranked Aztecs could only manage one point at the No. 5 spot in singles, where freshman Nicole Havlicek fell to Julie Chidley, 6-4, 6-1.

Aside from the loss at No. 5, Cal did not drop one set the entire match. Starting off the day with all three doubles tandems grabbing wins, the Bears took control of the match in singles. At the No. 1 spot, freshman Raquel Kops-Jones found her rhythm and defeated Silvia Tornier, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Christina Fusano knocked out Lindsey Hedberg, while freshman Jieun Jacobs defeated Whitney Wells, 7-6(6), 6-4.

At the No. 4 spot for the Bears, freshman Catherine Lynch made quick work of Katey Becker, defeating her 6-1, 6-1. At No. 6, freshman Sekita Grant got past Erin Polowski, 7-6(4), 6-4.

Making her appearance in the lineup after leg surgery at the end of the fall was senior All-American Anita Kurimay. Kurimay, who has been recovering from surgery the past month teamed up with freshman Kops-Jones at the No. 1 spot in doubles. The duo handily defeated Silvia Tornier and Lindsey Hedberg, 8-3.

The Bears play the University of San Diego, Feb. 10, at 12 noon.
