Softball Scores Nine to Defeat UC Riverside in Game 2

BERKELEY, Calif - Cal had a little easier time in game 2, defeating the Highlanders, 9-1 in five innings. Sophomore transfer Kourtney Davis earned the win for the Bears to go 1-0 on the year, while Jessica Jenkins took the loss for UCR to fall to 1-4.

Cal put a single run on the board in this first, on a Bowie sacrifice fly that brought in sophomore Kristen Morley.

The Bears put a five spot on the board in the second. Sophomore Mikella Pedretti led off the inning with a home run to left. Sophomore Courtney Scott followed with a single to left. After a strikeout, Morley singled, moving Scott to second. Senior Pauline Due�as then singled to center, advancing Scott to third and Morley to second. Bowie followed that up with a single to left, driving in Scott and Morley. On the play, Due�as advanced to third and Bowie went to second. With the score 3-0, Due�as scored on a wild pitch, allowing Bowie to take third. Nelson made the second out on a line-out to second, making way for Harper, who singled to left, bringing Bowie, and giving Cal, a 6-0 lead.

The Bears would find the scoreboard again in the fourth. In the inning, Nelson homered to center, bringing in Bowie who led off the inning with a single. Scott drove in freshman Danielle Setiawan, who was running for Harper, when she singled to left, to bring the Cal lead to, 9-0.

The Highlanders put a run on the board in their half of the fifth on an RBI double by Kiara Burneleit, who drove in Danielle Ray who singled earlier in the inning.

Cal returns to action tomorrow when it travels to Stockton to take on the Univ. of Pacific Tigers in a doubleheader with the first game to start at noon.
