Softball Takes Two Of Three At Corpus Christi Tournament

Feb. 10, 2001

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - - The Oregon State women's softball squad won two of three games at the Texas A&M/Corpus Christi tournament on Saturday, as they defeated Mississippi State 1-0 and Tennessee 6-0, but fell to Southwest Texas State, 5-2.

The Beavers (6-2) got solid pitching from Crystal Draper and Monica Hoffman all day, as the pitching staff threw two shutouts.

OSU started the day with a 1-0 extra-inning win over Mississippi State, as Clare Burnum, Tracy Feldt, and Shelly Prochaska each went 1-for-3.

The game came down to the international tiebreaker, and Oregon State started with Michelle Notaro on second. Cara Maxey bunted Notaro over to third, where she was driven in by Shannon Sorg on a base hit to short to give the Beavers the win.

'The pitchers did a great job,' OSU head coach Kirk Walker said. 'Monica did a great job this morning by keeping them off balance and allowing us to stay in the ballgame.'

Southwest Texas State proved to be more than OSU bargained for, as the Beavers dropped their second game of the season.

Shelly Prochaska went 2-for-4 and Brooke Rutschman turned in a 1-for-4 performance in the loss.

'The second game was a little tougher,' Walker said. 'Unfortunately, we didn't get the offense going until the seventh inning, and by then it was too little, too late.'`OSU rebounded in grand fashion against Tennessee in the day's final game, as the Beavers exploded to score all six of their runs in the final inning to take a 6-0 win. The Volunteers hurt themselves with eight errors.

Draper improved her record to 6-1 with the win, while the offense held up its end of the bargain with Clare Burnum going 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Tracy Feldt was 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run, Brooke Rutschman was 1-for-3, scoring a run, and Michelle Chariton went 1-for-4.

'We were finally more aggressive offensively and broke out in the seventh inning,' Walker said. 'It was exciting to see the players come through and hit the ball really well. It was a very big win tonight.'

OSU plays Tennessee again Sunday at 10 a.m. Pacific.
