The USC women's basketball team began the second half of the Pac-10season with a win over UCLA, 61-56, on Saturday (Feb. 10). Thevictory avenged an earlier season loss to the Bruins and broke atwo-game losing streak for the Women of Troy. This week, USCtravels to Arizona to face the Arizona State Sun Devils on Thursday(Feb. 15) at 7 p.m. MT, and the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday (Feb. 18)at 2 p.m MT. The USC-Arizona game will be televised and aired liveon Fox Sports West 2 at 1 p.m. PT.

Nine games into the 2000 Pac-10 season, USC was in a familiarposition. The Trojans were 3-6 in conference play with nine gamesleft. USC embarked on a 7-2 conference run, eventually earning a bidto the WNIT. It could be said that a win at home against UCLA on Feb.12, 2000, turned the season around for the Women of Troy.

For the first time this season, a freshman did not lead the team inpoints and/or rebounds in USC's victory against the Bruins.Prior to Saturday, a freshman had led in scoring the last 12 con-secutivegames.Denise Woods tied a career high with five blocks against UCLA.

USC defended its home court Saturday, defeating UCLA 61-56 be-fore2,136 at the Sports Arena. The Bruins took a 13-6 (12:52) leadat the start of the game. However, a jumper by Denise Woods at theeight minute mark gave the lead to the Women of Troy (14-13). TheTrojans never looked back, going on a 10-0 run to go up 28-17 (3:28).USC held a eight-point advantage at the break (34-26). In the secondhalf, UCLA held USC scoreless for the first three minutes, but theWomen of Troy regained their composure and went on a 10-2 run,led by two quick shots by Woods to go up 47-36 (12:23). UCLA'sMichelle Greco stopped USC's run with a three-pointer and then ledthe Bruins on a 14-3 run of their own to get the deficit down to onlytwo points, 52-50, with four minutes on the clock. That was as closeas UCLA would get. USC withstood the run and hit key free throwsin the final minutes to defeat the Bruins and earn a split in this year'srivalry.
