Women's Tennis To Play At The USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships

MADISON, Wisc. - The 22nd-ranked Washington women's tennis team will head to the USTA/ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships. The nation's premier women's team indoor event, will be hosted by the University of Wisconsin at the A.C. Nielsen Tennis Stadium starting this Thursday, Feb. 15-18.

This year's championships will be highlighted by top-ranked Stanford, who won last year's indoor title, No. 2 Georgia, the defending NCAA champions, and No. 3 Duke, finalists two our of the last three years in Madison. Joining that trio of favorites are: No. 6 UCLA, No. 8 Wake Forest, No. 9 Pepperdine, No. 11 (tie) Vanderbilt and Notre Dame, No. 13 Southern California, No. 15 (tie) Northwestern and Tennessee, No. 18 Baylor, No. 20 Ohio State, No. 22 Washington, Oklahoma State and Wisconsin.

Thursday's opening round matches are as follows: Stanford vs. Baylor, Wake Forest vs. Southern California, UCLA vs. Northwestern, Vanderbilt vs. Washington, Ohio State vs. Pepperdine, Tennessee vs. Duke and Oklahoma State vs. Notre Dame and Wisconsin vs. Georgia. Thursday's two sessions are at 9 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. CT.

Also highlighting this year's national women's indoor tournament is Stanford sophomore Laura Granville, who currently has a 55-match win streak and is closing in on Washington's own head coach Patty McCain's Stanford and NCAA record 57-match win streak. McCain set the record while winning back to back NCAA titles in 1986-87.

Granville, a native of Chicago, is the defending NCAA champion and won the Rolex National Indoor singles title earlier this month. Granville ended last season with a 35-match win streak and is 20-0 this season. She is 67-2 in two seasons at Stanford and has not lost since Jan. 14, 2000 (6-4, 6-2 to UCLA's Amanda Basica).Granville will play at least three matches and as many as four (if Stanford reaches the final) in this weeks team tournament.She will be going for win No. 56 tomorrow against Baylor in the first round at 3:30 p.m. CT.
