Feb. 15, 2001
MADISON, Wisc. - Stanford sophomore Laura Granville (Chicago, IL/The Latin School) picked up her 56th consecutive singles victory on Thursday night to lead the top-ranked Stanford University women's tennis team (7-0) to a 7-0 win over 17th-ranked Baylor University (4-2) in the first round of the USTA/ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the University of Wisconsin.
The defending NCAA Singles Champion and third-ranked Granville defeated 26th-ranked Jahnavi Prarekh of Baylor 6-1, 6-3 to move just one win away from the NCAA record for consecutive women's tennis singles victories. The record of 57 is currently held by former Stanford star, and current Washington head coach, Patty Fendick McCain, who established the record from 1986-87. Granville won 35 straight matches to end last season, and is 21-0 this year. Her collegiate record currently stands at an amazing 68-2.
Stanford won all nine matches contested on Thursday, and took five of the six singles matches in straight sets. The Cardinal also lost a combined total of just two games in the three doubles matches, including an 8-0 win by sixth-ranked Lauren Barnikow (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge HS) and Lauren Kalvaria (Indialantic, FL/Boca Raton Prep) at No. 1 doubles.
In other singles matches, the Cardinal's 25th-ranked Kalvaria upset 19th-ranked Katja Kovac 3-6, 6-4, 1-0 (13-11 third set tiebreaker) at No. 2. At No. 3 singles, Stanford's 27th-ranked Gabriela Lastra (Reno, NV/Reno HS) beat 50th-ranked Vida Mulec 7-5, 6-3.
Stanford will next face Pac-10 rival and ninth-ranked Southern California (6-1) in Friday quarterfinal action at 3:30 p.m. (CT). The Trojans defeated Wake Forest 5-0 on Thursday.
