Four Perfect 10's Awarded In Meet Between No. 1 UCLA, No. 21 OSU
Feb. 16, 2001
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Gymnastics fans were treated to four perfect 10.0s in a meet featuring No. 1 UCLA and No. 21 Oregon State at Gill Coliseum on Friday night. The top-ranked Bruins defeated the Beavers, but OSU still turned in its top score of the season in a 198.250-196.375 loss. UCLA's score was a new Pac-10 record.
'When UCLA hits, they have an incredibly talented team,' said OSU coach Tanya Chaplin. 'I'm really proud of our kids. I wanted them to go out aggressive, and they did.'
OSU's Katrina Severin and UCLA's Onnie Willis each received 10.0 scores on vault, while UCLA's Jamie Dantzscher (floor) and Kristen Maloney (beam) also were perfect. Severin became just the second Beaver to reach perfection on that event. Kristie Snyder scored a 10.0 twice, once in 1995 and again in 1996. With Severin's win on vault tonight, she extended her winning streak to five consecutive meets with a vault title.
Several other near-perfect scores were also awarded on floor. Severin, Willis and OSU's Lara Degenhardt each received a 10.0 from one judge but settled for a 9.975 score after the other judge awarded them marks of 9.95.
The Beavers turned in a school-record 49.400 on beam and didn't have to count a score lower than 9.825 on the event. Four Beavers notched new personal bests, led by Stephanie Bychowski's 9.95 and Marissa Bruch's 9.90. Elaine Yoder added a 9.875, while Lindsay Nelson's 9.825 was also a new career-high. Incidentally, tonight was the first time Nelson competed on beam since spraining her ankle on the event a month ago. Rounding out the school-record outing was Severin, who scored a 9.85. OSU dropped Annie Campbell's 9.80. The Beavers also got a career-high 9.90 out of Megan Suratt, who competed an exhibition routine.
OSU also had a near-record performance on floor with a season-high 49.550, just .025 off the school record of 49.575. Severin and Degenhardt led the way with their 9.975 routines, while Campbell had a season-high 9.925. Bruch (9.875) and Yoder (9.80) added career-highs as well.
But the Beavers also continued their streak of having to count a fall in their team totals after having two falls on bars. Elizabeth Jillson scored a team-best 9.90 to place third overall, while Degenhardt and Nelson set new career-bests with 9.875 scores. Campbell added a 9.80, but Bychowski and Soni Meduna both scored 9.15s after falling, which meant the Beavers had to count one of their scores. UCLA's Mohini Bhardwaj won the event with a 9.95.
'We had a few mishaps on bars, but that was more a case of them going out there too hard,' Chaplin said. '(All in all), this was one of our better performances tonight.'
