Cougar Baseball Upsets 18th-Ranked Cowboys with 12-2 Victory
Feb. 17, 2001
ENID, Okla. - Battling the weather for the past two weeks, the WSU baseball team's performance Saturday was anything but stormy as they defeated nationally ranked Oklahoma State 12-2 at Allen Ballpark in the Cougars' first game since February 4. The game was moved to Allen Ballpark because of bad field conditions in Stillwater that also cancelled Friday's game.
'The biggest key for us today was our pitching,' said WSU head coach Tim Mooney. 'Tyson Thompson played great and really located his pitches, and (Justin) Cayetano's innings were huge for us.'
Thompson, making his fourth appearance of the season for the Cougs, kept the Cowboy bats silent for most of the game, not allowing a run until the fifth inning. In five innings-plus work, Thompson allowed just two hits and struck out three to earn his first win of the year.
OSU tried to get a rally started against Thompson in the bottom of the sixth by loading the bases with no outs, but Cayetano came on in relief and surrendered only one run on a sacrifice fly to preserve the WSU lead at 3-2. In his two innings of relief, Cayetano allowed only one baserunner and shut down any hope the Cowboys had for a win.
In the seventh, WSU's offense took advantage of several Cowboy mistakes, as the Cougars batted around while scoring nine runs to seal the win. The Cougars manufactured five runs primarily through walks and a couple of errors before newcomer Tanner Kahler, in his second at bat of the inning, hit a grand slam to record his first home run as a Cougar. Kahler's blast put the game out of hand with a 12-2 lead, a lead that would end the game because of the 10-run rule.
'We played more like a team, we advanced the runners, and we had good at-bats. Anyone can beat a team once, so tomorrow will be our true test,' Mooney said.
Sunday's game will be played at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater at 11 a.m. PST.
