Men's Golf Shoots Up To 11th At Taylor Made Intercollegiate

Feb. 17, 2001

WAIKOLOA, Haw. - - In somewhat calmer conditions than the 40 mile-per-hour winds of the first round, the Oregon State men's golf team shot past much of the competition to move into a tie for 11th with second-ranked Georgia Tech after shooting a 307 for Friday's second round of the Taylor Made Intercollegiate.

OSU played the par-70 Beach course for the second 18 holes, and is just five shots out of eighth place.

With the exception of Michael Jurgensen, who opened with a team-low 78, all of the Beavers cut at least six strokes off their opening round scores.

Jurgensen carded a 78 both days, and is tied with Anthony Arvidson for 20th - along with four other players - at 14-over 156.

Arvidson, who has finished in the top-25 of every tournament he has played this year, fired a 75 in the second round. Both Arvidson and Jurgensen are four shots out of a spot in the top-10 heading into the final round.

Cameron MacKenzie lopped nine strokes off his opening-round 85 to post a 76 and move up to a tie for 50th at 19-over 161.

David Yarnes and Daren Grieg each dropped their scores significantly, as Yarnes came back from a 90 on Thursday to card a 78, while Grieg went from 93 to 80. Yarnes is tied for 97th and Grieg is tied for 111th.

The entire field will wrap up play on the par -72 Kings' Course on Saturday with a final 18 holes.

Fourth-ranked Texas still leads the tournament, but its five-stroke margin has been cut to one after going from an opening-round 302 to 310 on Friday. Oregon overtook TCU and jumped into second just one shot back of the Longhorns at 613.

In the battle for medalist honors, Texas' Matt Brost and BYU's Scott Miller are knotted at 5-over 147 after both recorded rounds of 75-72--147.
