TEMPE, Ariz. -- Backed by a strong six inning performance from starting pitcher Mike Byer, the St. Mary's Gaels upset the No. 4 Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team 6-4 in the second game of a day-night doubleheader held Saturday at Packard Stadium.

The Sun Devils crushed Creighton 15-2 in the afternoon game and now stand at 11-2 on the year. St. Mary's, who lost earlier in the day 3-0 to Northwestern in the Oakland A's College Tournament, improved to 4-7 with the win. Ironically, three of those wins have come against Arizona schools, with the Gales taking two of three from the Arizona Wildcats earlier this year in Tucson.

A leadoff triple by Brett Wayne set the stage early in what would be a battle tell the end. St. Mary's grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first when Wayne later scored on a sacrifice fly to left field. With Byer in control holding ASU to only one hit in the first two innings, the Sun Devils jumped ahead of St. Mary's with two runs in the third. Senior catcher Casey Myers delivered a run-scoring single and Jeremy West plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Gaels did virtually of their damage in the fourth and fifth frames, scoring three and two runs in consecutive innings. The two-run fourth was fueled by four hits to chase ASU freshman starter Ryan Schroyer (2-1) from the game. Center fielder Kaazim Summerville brought home a run with a towering triple to center field and second baseman Brian Finegan capped the rally with a single up the middle to stake St. Mary's to the 4-2 lead. The Gaels clutched up in the fifth to score two runs with two outs and take the 6-3 lead. St. Mary's would not score again and managed only two hits over the last four innings as senior left-handed reliever Drew Friedberg shut them down. Friedberg has yet to allow and earned run in eight innings.

The Devils certainly had their opportunities, but in the end left 12 runners on base. With one run already scored in the fourth, West left the bases loaded when he struck out to end the scoring threat. The freshman first baseman also had an opportunity in the sixth with a runner in scoring position, but struck out looking.

St. Mary's relief pitcher Ryan Heil picked up the save, allowing only two hits and struck out three in 3.0 innings of work. The Gaels were led at the plate by designated hitter Tim Spooner's 2-for-5 game. No other Gael recorded more than one hit.

Myers was one of three Devils to record a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. The senior All-American catcher now has 27 RBI on the year in 12 games and is hitting at a .429 clip (24x56). Dennis Wyrick and Jeff Phelps also had two hits apiece for ASU.

The Sun Devils will finish up their three-game series with Creighton tomorrow with a 12 p.m. game against the Bluejays at Packard Stadium. RHP Andy Torres (4-0) is scheduled to start for ASU.
