Feb. 18, 2001
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Oregon State's softball squad dropped its Sunday afternoon game against No. 25 Utah, 12-6, to finish the UNLV Tournament with a 4-1 record.
'I was extremely disappointed in how we came out to play,' commented OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'It was a big regional game and we weren't focused and ready to go.'
Utah tallied five runs in the first inning to jump on the Beavers from the start.
'Utah played extremely well, they swung the bats well and we were very flat,' said Walker.Oregon State got on the board with four runs in the fourth inning but the effort according to Walker, was 'too little, too late.'
Senior Shawna Feldt belted a double and knocked in a pair of runs, going 2-for-5 on the day. Sophomore Steph Adams continued her hot hitting with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI while junior Michelle Chariton also went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Clare Burnum recorded the Beavers only other extra base hit with a double, to go along with a pair of stolen bases.
The Utes pounded 14 hits on the day while the Beavers had eight.
'We just didn't come ready to play,' said Walker. 'Hopefully this will be a good learning experience.'
The Beavers (12-3) hope to bounce back next week at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in Columbus, Georgia. The prestigious tournament hosts the nations top softball programs. OSU will face defending National Champion University of Oklahoma, Friday (Feb. 23) at Noon.
