Tennis Takes On San Diego, Oregon

This Week -- Returning from the ITA Team Championships, 12th-ranked USC women's tennis (6-3) hosts San Diego on Thursday, Feb. 22, and conference foe Oregon on Friday, Feb. 23. Both match will be played at 1:30 p.m. at Marks Tennis Stadium.
USC News & Notes -- Sophomore Maureen Diaz owns the team's best record so far with a 16-6 mark and .727 win percentage ... This year's roster features no seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and two freshmen... USC's top-six are all underclassmen.
USC vs. San Diego, Oregon -- USC is 13-3 all-time against 63rd-ranked San Diego. The last time the two teams faced each other was in the second round of the 1999 NCAA Tournament. USC won 5-1. Against the Ducks, the Women of Troy are 4-0 in a series that began in 1997. Last season, USC defeated the Ducks 7-2 in Eugene.
The Trojans' Last Outing -- After a 6-0 win over San Diego State and a upset victory over ninth-ranked Pepperdine (4-3) on Feb. 7 and 9, the Women of Troy traveled to Madison, Wisc. for the ITA Team Championships.
In the first round, USC defeated 14th-ranked Wake Forest 5-0, defaulting two matches after clinching the victory at No. 5 as Melissa Esmero took Elizabeth Proctor in three, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
Advancing to the quarterfinals, USC faced an uphill battle by taking on No. 1 Stanford. The Women of Troy were swept 7-0.
The Trojans fell to the quarterfinal playoffs to face No. 20 Northwestern. Against the Wildcats, USC began singles play down 1-0 after dropping two of three doubles matches. The Women of Troy earned their only two points in the match at No. 3 and 6 singles as Maureen Diaz and Tiffany Brymer took two, two-set victories over Shannon Duffy and Jessica Rush.
Peterson Competes at ITA Individual Championship -- Jewel Peterson entered last week's (Feb. 1-4) tournament as a No. 5-8 seed and defeated Maria Galoustove-Phillips of Oklahoma State 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round. In the second round, Peterson fell to Ipek Senoglu of Pepperdine in a close three-set match 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (5).
2001 Fall Highlights -- Jewel Peterson highlighted USC's fall season by capturing her second-straight ITA Rolex Regional Singles Championship. Peterson defeated Michelle Gough of Arizona in the finals in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 and upset UCLA's Sara Walker - the third-ranked player in the country - in the semifinals. Sophomore Maureen Diaz also had an outstanding fall after winning the back draw title at the ASU Invitational (sophomore Anita Loyola won the title last season).
Head Coach Richard Gallien -- Richard Gallien enters his sixth season at the helm of the USC women's tennis program. Last season he guided the 2000 Trojans to a 18-9 overall record, a No. 11 final team ranking and a quarterfinal appearance at the NCAAs. Gallien began his career at Pepperdine, coaching the men's team for three years, before joining the Trojan family. Over the last nine years, he has compiled a 146-81 (.643) overall record and his teams have made five appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
