UW Men's Tennis Team Draws its Highest Ranking Ever

Feb. 21, 2001

PRINCETON, N.J. - The Washington men's tennis team garnered its highest national ranking ever, climbing 13 places to No. 6 in Wednesday's Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) poll after defeating a pair of top five teams last weekend.

The Huskies vaulted from No. 19 to sixth after an outstanding performance during the National Team Indoor Championships that took place Feb. 15-18 in Seattle. Washington opened the tournament Thursday with an upset of then fourth-ranked Georgia and then beat No. 8 Florida on Saturday. The lone UW loss during the championships came on Friday to No. 5 Duke which this week is ranked third.

'It's the highest ranking in school history, that's awesome,' said head coach Matt Anger who guided the team to NCAA Tournament berths in each of his previous six seasons at Washington. 'Our schedule have been incredibly difficult with matches against five of the top 11 teams in the current poll. We've won and lost to highly ranked teams, but all matches have been close. This team has the character to believe that they can play with the top teams in the country.'

UCLA replaced Stanford atop the ITA poll after defeating the Cardinal on Sunday in the Team Indoor final. Stanford is second while No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Texas Christian and No. 5 Texas A&M round out the top five.

Washington's only previous appearance in the top 10 was a No. 9 ranking on March 9, 1999. Anger hopes his team will respond to the lofty poll placing by proving that is it deserved.

'We have to continue to play the way that got us to this point, to show that Washington can play great tennis,' Anger explains. 'If you want to be a top-10 team you have to show that you can not only compete with the other top teams, but that you can work hard and consistently out-perform the teams below you.'

The Huskies put their No. 6 ranking to the test this weekend in Eugene, Ore. Washington meets UC Santa Barbara on Saturday and Oregon on Sunday.
