Stanford Story
The Stanford Cardinal will send 30 athletes (15 men, 15 women) to the MPSF Championships this weekend at Northern Arizona ... Stanford will also send five runners to the Virgina Tech Indoor Meet on Saturday (Feb. 24) ... Maurica Carlucci is expected to run the 800 meters, while Lauren Fleshman, Erin Sullvan and Elena Villarreal are expected to compete in the 3,000 meters, and Laura Turner in the mile.

The MPSF Championships, originally scheduled for Long Beach, Calif., was recently moved to Flagstaff, home of Northern Arizona University. The University of Arizona is the host school. Admission is free.

Competition Catalogue
Nine Pac-10 schools with track & field programs will participate in the MPSF along with several schools from the Big West Conference. This weekend's meet will feature many of the top collegians.

Cardinal competitors have enjoyed excellent success thus far in the 2001 indoor season ... Among the NCAA indoor qualifiers are Gabe Jennings in the mile (4:00.92), Jonathon Riley in the 3,000 meters (7:48.79, school record) and 5,000 meters (13:52.20), Louis Luchini in the 5,000 meters (13:53.87), Lauren Fleshman in the mile (4:39.69), and the women's distance medley relay team (11:19.06) ... There are numerous NCAA provisional qualifiers including Donald Sage in the mile (4:01.34), Riley in the mile (4:01.89), Seth Hejny in the 3,000 meters (8:04.76), Michael Ponikvar in the high jump (7-2 1/4), and the men's distance medley relay team (9:37.94), Ashley Couper in the 800 meters (2:08.35), Lindsay Hyatt in the 800 meters (2:08.83), Elena Villarreal in the 3,000 meters (9:32.87), Victoria Chang in the 5,000 meters (16:44.82), Maureen Onyeagbako in the weight throw (61-6 3/4), Kim Stone in the high jump (5-10 3/4), and Jillian Camarena in the shot put (51-8 1/4).

Several Stanford athletes rank high in the MPSF Indoor standings ... In the mile, Donald Sage (4:01.34), Jonathon Riley (4:01.89), and Gabe Jennings (4:04.74) rank 1-2-3, and Seth Hejny (4:10.32) is sixth ... In the 5,000 meters, Riley (13:52.20) is first, followed by Louis Luchini (13:53.87) ... Five Cardinal runners are ranked in the Top 10 in the 5,000 meters ... Stanford's men's distance medley relay team is first in the conference at 9:37.94 ... Michael Ponikvar is #1 in the high jump (7-2 1/4) ... Ashley Couper is first in the MPSF in the 800 meters (2:08.25), while Lindsay Hyatt is third (2:08.83) ... Four Cardinal women runners are ranked in the Top 6 in the 5,000 meters led by Victoria Chang who is ranked second at 16:44.82 ... Lauren Fleshman is rated first in the mile (4:39.69), while Elena Villarreal is first in the 3,000 meters (9:32.87) ... Jillian Camarena is second in the shot put (51-8 1/4), Kim Stone is second in the high jump (5-10 3/4), Maureen Onyeagbako is fourth in the weight throw (61-6 3/4), and Julie Tinker is fourth in the long jump (19-9 3/4)

History Hoopla
Several MPSF meet records are held by Stanford athletes ... Toby Stevenson jumped 18-2 3/4 in the pole vault last year, Adam Connolly threw the weight 71-7 1/4 in 1999, and the women's distance medley relay team ran 11:41.94 in 1994.

Last Year's MPSF Championships
Stanford men's team won the team title last year while the Cardinal women finished second.
