Men's 1600m Relay Team Sets ASU Record at MPSF Indoor Championships
Feb. 24, 2001
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- The Arizona State men's 1600m relay team of Michael Campbell, Jason Barton, Pete Lopez and Tony Berrian set a school-record with a winning effort and NCAA provisional qualifying time of 3:07.02, highlighting the final day of competition at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Walkup Skydome in Flagstaff Saturday afternoon.
The Sun Devil women ended the two-day meet in fourth-place with 55.5 points, while the men finished seventh with 32.50 points. Host school Arizona took home the women's team title with 142 points and Washington State's men won their respective title as well with 108.5.
The men's 1600m-relay team, that just missed posting an automatic qualifying time, improved upon the previous school record by over a minute, a time of 3:08.35 set in 1999. Berrian was also a member of that former record-setting squad two seasons ago.
Additional ASU sprinters also stole the show Saturday, as the women's 1600m relay team of Candida Coulson, Courtnie Ratliff, Seneca Holmes and Joni Smith also turned in a provisional qualifying time, placing second in 3:41.77. Junior Tony Galaviz took home the only individual meet crown for the Sun Devils, winning the 60m hurdles with an altitude adjusted time of 7.97, while senior Sharesa Turner took runner-up honors in the 60m in a time of 7.73a.
Adrienne Judie turned in yet another PQ in the shot put, placing fifth with a mark of 49 feet, 2.5 inches. Judie's mark did not exceed her season best in the event (50-10.25), yet every shot and weight-throw effort the senior thrower has made this indoor season has met provisional or automatic standards.
Next week, those Sun Devils still with NCAA indoor qualifying hopes will have one last chance to meet those standards as ASU will travel to the Iowa State Last Chance Meet in Ames, Iowa Friday, March 2. The rest of the ASU track and field contingent will open the outdoor season at home, hosting the Bill Sawyer Invitational Saturday, March 3, at Sun Angel Stadium. Field events are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m., with running events to follow at 11 a.m.
