No. 16 Softball Wins Two, Moves To 15-4

Feb. 24, 2001

COLUMBUS, Ga. - - The Oregon State women's softball team boosted its record to 15-4 on the season with wins over San Diego State and Fresno State at the NFCA Leadoff Classic on Saturday. The Beavers downed SDSU 5-2 and dispatched No. 8 FSU 3-1.

Against SDSU, Monica Hoffman gave the Beavers a complete game from the mound, giving up just five hits while striking out seven.

OSU jumped out to a three-run lead when Steph Adams belted a three-run shot that scored Michelle Chariton and Clare Burnum who had each singled earlier in the inning.

Michelle Notaro provided the Beavers with two more runs with a two-run blast of her own to give OSU a 5-1 lead.

Adams entered the day third on the team in batting with a .346 average and two homeruns. She went 2-for-3 against SDSU, with three RBI and a run.

OSU's second game saw the No. 16 Beavers hand eighth-ranked Fresno State its first loss, as the Beavers dropped FSU to 5-1.

The Beavers helped themselves with another big first inning, as they put three runs on the board. Shawna Feldt singled in Clare Burnam from second to start the scoring, and that was followed by a Steph Adams single to left. Feldt moved to third and Adams took second on the throw, setting up a Shelly Prochaska single that knocked in Feldt and Adams.

Feldt went 2-for-3 with a run and a RBI, while Prochaska went 2-for-3 with two RBI.

Pitcher Crystal Draper and the defense shut down the Bulldogs, allowing just one run in the fourth to preserve the win. Draper allowed just five hits on the afternoon.

'Crystal threw a phenomenal game,' head coach Kirk Walker said. 'She was focused and threw hard. She really was the sparkplug that kept us going throughout the game.

'Offensively, we were aggressive and disciplined. We set the tempo in the first inning and continued to hit throughout the game.

'These were very important games for us,' Walker continued. 'Fresno State is a national powerhouse, so to beat them is great - they're a good rival.'

The Beavers will play tomorrow morning at 11:30 Eastern against the winner of the Missouri-DePaul game. With a win, OSU will play in the Championship contest at 2:30.
