Feb. 25, 2001
SEATTLE - The 19th-ranked Oregon State gymnastics team did not have to count a fall for the first time this season, but Washington narrowly edged the Beavers in a dual meet Sunday at Bank of America Arena. The Huskies won with a school record 196.875, while OSU came through with a 196.325 for its second best score of the year.
'I'm happy with our performances. We came out and nearly tied our season-high and it's never easy to do that on the road,' coach Tanya Chaplin said. 'They're going to build on that for Stanford.'
The Beavers started strong on the uneven bars with Soni Meduna regrouping after last week's fall to score a career-high 9.75 on OSU's first routine. The Beavers scored a 49.175 as a team, led by Stephanie Bychowski's 9.925. Lara Degenhardt added a career-high 9.90, while Lindsay Nelson added a 9.85. Annie Campbell turned in a 9.75 to round out the scoring. Elizabeth Jillson fell and scored a 9.05, but the Beavers didn't need to count her score.
The Huskies opened with a season-high 49.275 on vault, highlighted by Stacy Wong's career-high 9.95. Three other Huskies scored 9.85 marks on the event.
OSU had five gymnasts set or tie season or career-highs on vault as the Beavers turned in a season-high 48.90 on that event. Meduna and Nelson each scored 9.70 to set to new career-highs, while Degenhardt (9.875), Campbell (9.75) and Elaine Yoder (9.65) had season-highs. Katrina Severin added a 9.875.
Meanwhile, the Huskies extended their lead with a school record 49.500 on bars, with three gymnasts scoring a 9.90 or better. Wong picked up her second win of the meet with a 9.95, while Lanna Apisukh had a 9.925 and Kim Claussen a 9.90.The record-setting performance gave the Huskies a 98.775-98.075 lead after two events.
The Beavers made up some ground in the third rotation as the Huskies had to count a fall on beam. OSU scored a 49.150 on floor to UW's 48.700 beam score to close the gap to 147.475-147.225 in favor of the Huskies. Severin led the way for the Beavers on floor with a 9.925, while Campbell added a 9.90. Degenhardt scored a 9.85, followed by Yoder (9.75) and Meduna (9.725). Marissa Bruch fell for a 9.15 but the Beavers dropped the score en route to their second-highest floor score of the year.
Wong and Apisukh both scored a 9.90 on their beam routines to lead the Huskies on that event.
The beam woes carried over to OSU, with Nelson falling to lead off the Beavers. OSU didn't have to count Nelson's 9.40, though, as the Beavers escaped without a fall for the rest of the rotation. Campbell led the way with a 9.90, and Severin, Bychowski and Yoder each scored 9.875. Bruch rounded out the scoring with a 9.575.
Campbell finished the afternoon with a season-high 39.300 all-around score to finish fourth overall. Wong set a school record with a 39.70 to win the all-around.
