No. 6 Softball Wins Bronze Bracket At The NFCA Leadoff Classic

Feb. 26, 2001

COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The sixth-ranked Arizona State softball team (13-4) won the Bronze Bracket at the NFCA Leadoff Classic in a rain-shortened tournament Sunday in Columbus, Georgia.

In the semifinal game, which turned out to be the championship game, Arizona State defeated San Diego State (7-8), 2-1 on an Erica Beach three-hitter. Beach also supplied the scoring as Arizona State scored their two runs in the first inning to seal the win.

With two outs, Nichole Thompson singled to third base and then sole second base. Shiloh Talanoa was then hit by a pitch and Kara Brun walked to load the bases. Erica Beach then singled to center field to bring home Thompson and Brun.

The Aztecs would cut the lead in half in the fifth inning when Janna Kovensky hit a solo home run to left field that just cleared the fence.

However, Beach (9-2) would settle down and retire SDSU in order in the sixth and seventh innings for her ninth win on the year and third win of the tournament. For her efforts, Beach was named to the all-tournament team.

The victory also marked Head Coach Linda Well's 750th career win and 399th career win at Arizona State.

Up next, Arizona State will host Santa Clara on Friday, March 2 at 7:00 p.m.
