Beavers Win Home Opener

Feb. 27, 2001

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Oregon State's Thad Johnson pitched seven scoreless innings Tuesday afternoon and Josh Howard and Josh Carter hit three-run homers as the Beavers beat Portland 9-0 in OSU's baseball home-opener. After the Opening Day win under sunny skies, OSU (7-5 overall, 0-0 Pacific-10) now has an all-time record of 74-18 in home-openers at Goss Stadium at Coleman Field.

'It's always nice to win the first game at home,' said Oregon State coach Pat Casey, whose team has won seven of its last nine games. 'As a team, we felt we could do better offensively, but it was great to see Thad go out and pitch well. It was a good team win.'

The Beavers will be at home again this weekend for a three-game non-league series against San Francisco, with game times Friday at 2 p.m., Saturday at 1 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Against Portland (3-5, 0-0 West Coast), Johnson teamed with Scott Nicholson and Stephen Copeland on a three-hitter. Johnson, now 1-1 this season, gave up just two hits and a walk in his seven innings of work, striking out six. He'd pitched well in his first two starts of the season, at Cal State-Northridge and San Diego State, but received no decision in both games before taking a loss against 10th-ranked Clemson last Friday.

'It's a relief in a way to have it up there,' Johnson said of the first win. 'In two of my three starts, I felt like I'd pitched well enough to win, it was going to show up somewhere during the year. It shows baseball is a team game - everybody contributed to our success.'

The senior righthander looked sharper than he had in his previous three outings, and Johnson felt pitching at home for the first time this spring might have had something to do with it.

'In a way, it did a little,' Johnson said. 'Against Clemson I didn't have good control of my fastball. In the last bullpen I threw before today, I was just trying to control it and slow myself down. If I'd thrown like I did today against Clemson, they wouldn't have had a shot, either. But it was definitely nice to be at home and pitch in front of our crowd.'

Nicholson and Copeland threw one inning each to complete the shutout, OSU's first since Mark Newell blanked Ohio State 13-0 in a seven-inning game last March at the Texas A&M Tournament. The Beavers' last nine-inning shutout was B.R. Cook's 1-0 one-hitter against Oklahoma State early in the 1999 season.

Oregon State got all the runs it needed in a four-run second inning, capped by Howard's three-run homer to right. It was the first homer as a Beaver for the senior transfer from Abilene Christian, who is starting in centerfield as Eric Stark recovers from a shoulder injury.

'A lot of times, guys get on the bench and never think they're going to play, and they're not ready,' said Howard, who is batting .286 this season. 'If you work hard enough, something good is bound to happen. Eric getting hurt isn't good - he's a great centerfielder - but it's been an opportunity for me, and it's been a lot of fun.'

Oregon State picked up four more runs in the fifth inning, with the key hit being Carter's three-run homer to left-center that chased Pilot starter Zach Yarbrough. It was Carter's second homer of the year, he was 2-for-4 on the day and is batting .500 for the season.

Bryan Ingram and Chris Biles were both 2-for-5 for the Beavers. OSU had 10 hits, the 10th time in 12 games this season that the Beavers have been in double-digits in hits.

Travis Hanson was 2-for-3 with a double for the Pilots and Bryan Dearinger had the other Portland hit, going 1-for-4. Yarbrough took the loss, going 4 2/3 innings and allowing eight runs (four earned) on seven hits and no walks, striking out four.
