Men's Golf Travels to USC

Feb. 27, 2001

BERKELEY - Cal regroups after a disappointing showing at last week's tournament in Hawaii. The men's golf team travels down the coast to Westlake, Calif. where the Bears will compete in the Southwestern Intercollegiate at North Ranch Country Club (6,815 yards, Par 71).

'You want a strong field, you've got one this week,' said Cal head coach Steve Desimone. In addition to host USC and Cal, who took first and second place respectively at the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate in January, the field also includes No. 7 New Mexico, No. 8 Brigham Young, No. 19 TCU, No. 22 Minnesota and No. 25 Houston. The rest of the field: Arizona State, Fresno State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Oregon State, Pepperdine, UCLA and Washington.

Head coach Steve Desimone has selected the following five players to represent Cal at the Southwestern Intercollegiate:

PLAYER YR	FALL '00 RDS	AVG	TOP FINISH1. Peter Tomasulo	Fr.	9 73.1	tie-5th2. Jesse Ruda So.	12 74.0	1st3. Dong Yi Sr.	12 73.7	tie-12th4. Walter Chun Jr.	12 74.8	tie-26th5. James Hahn So.	3 82.0	60th

Cal battled a tough field in Hawaii last week and placed 15th with a 54-hole score of 876 (+12). The low-score-friendly course saw seven teams shoot below par. That, Cal coach Steve Desimone said, isn't the Bears kind of golf course.

'The strength of our game is being competitive, shooting around par,' he said. 'That was the easiest course we'll see as far as scoring goes all year long. We're playing on a course better suited for us at the Southwestern Intercollegiate.'

Freshman Peter Tomasulo and sophomore J.R. Ruda finished tied for 36th at last week's John A. Burns Intercollegiate after shooting a 217 (+1). Senior Dong Yi, tied for 64th place, finished with a score of 223 (+7). Junior Walter Chun (t-76th) shot a 226 (+10) and true freshman Lance Torrey finished tied for 86th place with a 229 (+13).

Cal's top golfer in 1999, senior Dong Yi returns to action after redshirting last season. At the PING-Arizona Intercollegiate in January, Yi placed 9th with a 54-hole, 1-under-par score of 212 (68-73-71). In the fall, Yi tied for 12th in two tournaments. As a junior, the golfer from Alameda led Cal in both top 5 finishes (3) and top 10 finishes (4).

The Bears will travel to Stevinson, Calif., March 26-27 to compete in the Stevinson Ranch Invitational. The tournament is a week before the Western Intercollegiate.
