WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - UCLA senior designated hitter Brian Baron has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and STANFORD junior right-hander Jeff Bruksch has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for February 19-26, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Baron, from Newhall, Calif., hit .750 with three RBI and two runs scored in UCLA's wins over No. 16 Tulane and No. 10 Pepperdine. Against the Waves, Baron went 4-for-5, driving in the game-tying run with a double in the ninth inning. His hit set up the game-winning run. Against Tulane he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. He currently leads the Bruins with a .510 batting average and 26 hits in 13 games. He has hit safely in every game this season.
Bruksch, from Los Angeles, notched his first career shutout with an 8-0 victory against Santa Clara. Bruksch allowed only three hits and gave up no walks in a nine-strikeout performance. The nine K's tied his career-high. He has now thrown 17.1 scoreless innings over his last two starts. The shutout and complete game victory was the first for a Cardinal this season.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Baron this season and his career, and the 36th selection all-time for UCLA. The Pitcher of the Week honor is the second for Bruksch in his career, and the 54th selection all-time for STANFORD.
Also nominated for Player of the Week were Shelley Duncan, ARIZ, Clint Hoover, CAL, Chris Biles, OSU, Jason Cooper, STAN and Jefferson Thiel, WASH. Also nominated for Pitcher of the Week were Brian Montalbo, CAL, Craig Hays, OSU, Josh Karp, UCLA and Mike Bomar, WASH.
