LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Freshman Gavin Meadows' fifth-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle led Arizona State's 13th-ranked men's swimming team at the first day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif., Thursday.

ASU, which has finished no better than fifth the past five seasons, finished the first day of the three-day championship meet in fifth-place with 76.5 points, just ahead of Washington's 68. Stanford emerged as the first-day leader with 249 points.

While USC's Klete Keller won the 500y free in 4:16.65, Meadows clocked in at an NCAA `B' qualifying time of 4:21.85. In addition to being the Sun Devils' season-best, Meadows' personal-record time was also the seventh-best in ASU history.

The only other Sun Devil to appear in the 500 free, junior Mike Dowling earned 15th-place in 4:28.95.

Meadows was not the only Sun Devil freshman to impress on the day, as fellow collegiate rookies Nick Brunelli and Mark Hill led the ASU attack in the 50y free. Turning in the team's fastest time of the year and the 10th-fastest ever at ASU, Brunelli's 19th-place-tying 20.34 missed the NCAA `B' standard by a mere hundredth (0.01) of a second. Hill followed just behind in 21st-place with a time of 20.41.

In the 400 individual medley, freshman Rich Jacobs grabbed 15th-place in a personal-best 1:50.86. Right behind him in 16th, senior Otto Hinks touched the wall in 1:51.08. Although runner-up to Jacobs in the finals, Hinks' preliminary time of 1:50.08 was the fastest by a Sun Devil this year.

In the first of two relays swam Thursday, the Sun Devil team of Simon MacDonald, Brunelli, Hill and Scott VonSchoff claimed an NCAA `B' time of 1:20.06 to finish fifth in the 200y free relay. Stanford led the way in 1:17.63, edging second-place California's 1:17.77 effort.

Closing out the first day's events, Brunelli, Hinks, MacDonald and VonSchoff picked up the Sun Devils' third fifth-place finish of the day, this time in the 400y medley relay (3:15.98 - B qualifier). Stanford emerged as the victor in that event in 3:11.65.

The Pac-10 Championships will continue Friday with preliminaries and finals of the 200y medley relay, 400y individual medley, 100y butterfly, 200y freestyle, 100y breaststroke, 100y backstroke and the 800y free relay.
