Men's Swimming Continues To Restructure Record Books At Pac-10 Championships
March 2, 2001
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Saving the best for last, four members of Arizona State's 13th-ranked men's swimming team combined to finish second in the 800-yard freestyle relay to close out the second day of the Pacific-10 Conference Championships at Belmont Plaza Pool in Long Beach, Calif., Friday.
Clocking in with an NCAA `B' qualifying time of 6:28.28, ASU's team of freshman Gavin Meadows, junior Bo West, junior Anders Lyrbring and senior Scott VonSchoff earned the fourth-best ASU time ever in the event while finishing runner-up to USC's NCAA-record 6:24.77.
With one day remaining, Stanford leads the conference championships with 589.5 points. USC is in second with 462.5, followed by Arizona (346), California (339.5), ASU (258.5) and Washington (122).
One day after he etched his name on ASU's 500y freestyle list, freshman Meadows moved to seventh all-time on the 200y free list with a fourth-place and NCAA `A' qualifying time of 1:36.31. Taking sixth-place for ASU was Lyrbring, fourth all-time at ASU, in a personal season-best of 1:36.70.
The Sun Devils also received strong finishes in the 200y free from VonSchoff (10th, 1:37.61), West (1:38.67) and freshman Federico Martin (19th, 1:39.75). Only Martin's time failed to meet the NCAA `B' standard of 1:39.28.
In Friday's other relay, ASU's 200-yard medley relay team of Nick Brunelli, Otto Hinks, Simon MacDonald and Mark Hill finished third in a team season-best 1:30.04, just ducking under the NCAA `B' qualifying standard of 1:30.11. Stanford won the event in Pac-10 meet best of 1:26.02.
In the 400y individual medley, senior Austin Paulsen finished tenth in 3:53.20, with freshman Rich Jacobs right behind him with an 11th-place time of 3:54.40. Both earned NCAA `B' times. Paulsen, second all-time in the event for ASU at 3:50.65, set a season-best in the final, while Jacobs' preliminary time of 3:54.39 moved him to seventh in the ASU record books.
In the 100y breaststroke finals, senior Otto Hinks failed to beat his preliminary time of 55.13, yet earned sixth-place in 55.53.
In the 100y backstroke, Brunelli and Ahmed Hussein represented ASU with 12th (49.49) and 13th (49.73) place finishes. Both were faster in the prelims, setting ASU's fifth and sixth best times in the event at 49.27 and 49.54, respectively.
