Softball Drops A Pair Of Games To Northridge

March 2, 2001

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The No. 14 ranked Oregon State softball squad dropped a pair of games to Cal-State Northridge on Friday afternoon.

CSUN held the Beavers to just one run in the double-header, picking up 1-0 and 2-1 victories.

OSU falls to 15-6-1 with the losses while Northridge improves to 9-4 on the season.

In the opening game of the day, both teams tallied just a pair of hits. Sondra Milchiker's 5th inning homerun provided all of the scoring in the contest.

Oregon State's Crystal Draper picked up the loss, dropping her record on the season to 10-2.

'Crystal pitched a nice ball-game other than the one pitch that was hit out of the park,' commented OSU head coach Kirk Walker. 'We didn't do anything offensively to help her out - she definitely pitched well enough to win.'

Shawna Feldt and Steph Adams picked up OSU's only hits in the game.

'We didn't make any adjustment offensively and didn't put any pressure on them,' said Walker.

Oregon State hit the ball better in the second game, blasting eight hits but was unable to put more than one run on the scoreboard.

'We hit the ball better but didn't get hits when we had runners in scoring position,' commented Walker. 'We never really put anything together.'

Monica Hoffman got the start for the Beavers and allowed just four hits but a second inning homerun by Amber Grahlman and another un-earned run in the inning would be all the Matadors would need for the win.

'Monica really shut them down and didn't give them a lot of opportunities,' said Walker. 'We just made a few mistakes behind her.'

Sophomore Clare Burnum had the Beavers' lone extra-base hit on the afternoon with a double while Shawna Feldt went 2-for-4 in the second game and led OSU with three hits on the day. Shelly Prochaska hit 2-for-3 and Michelle Chariton went 1-for-3, scoring Oregon State's only run.

'Our youth and inexperience is showing up consistently,' said Walker. 'We need to play with a little more heart and passion for success and winning.'

Oregon State hopes to get back on the winning track Saturday morning with a pair of games against Colorado State. Game-one is scheduled to start at 9 a.m.
